Celebrate sustainability with lightweight wine bottles

Celebrate sustainability!

It's something that most people don't really think about when buying a bottle of wine. How much does the wine bottle packaging weigh and what impact does it have on the environment?

In an era where all industries are expected to work hard on reducing their footprint, there is one simple thing that the Wine Industry can do to make a difference. Most 750ml wine bottles weigh around 415grams each. Simply choosing a light-weight wine bottle product can save 55 grams per bottle or 660 grams per case of wine. While this might not sound like much (and to the consumer this change is barely perceptible), this change could have a big environmental benefit if all producers made this change.

Transitioning the Australian Wine industry to lightweight bottles could save approximately 1,393.5 metric tons of COâ‚‚ annually. This is equivalent to about 1,719,753 kWh of electricity, or enough to power around 300 average Australian homes for a year.

Hackersley Estate is proud to announce that we have made this transition in the past few years and now all bottle stock selected for our wines is packaged in light-weight bottles. Our supplier also uses recycled glass in the production of our bottls and this year, the percentage of recycled glass used in their manufacture was 37.6%.

Switching to lightweight wine bottles offers a win-win for producers, consumers, and the planet, providing measurable reductions in carbon emissions, energy use, and costs while improving recycling and enhancing brand value. It’s a simple but impactful step toward more sustainable wine production in Austalia.

Cheers to community, family, and great wine!
